Are Wax Melts Safe?

A question that is always the first to come to mind when purchasing a product is ‘Is this product safe to use?’.

Many of our ex customers and consumers are parents of children and/or pets which means that whether wax melts are actually safe is a question that comes way before whether they smell nice and for those who are not, your own personal safety is important to us as well.

here is our answer to that question.

There has been evidence for essential oils being harmful to pets which is the source of fragrance in some wax melts.

Exposure to essential oils can cause symptoms like vomiting, slow heart rate and difficulty breathing for your beloved pets, especially dogs.

However, like some other wax melt producers, Little Miss Twiggie Twinkles recommends wax melts made with synthetic fragrance oils.

As well as creating a wider variety of scents it also means that it’s much safer for your pets.

Soy Wax

Soy wax is the main body in most wax melts which holds all the lovely scents.

So is it safe? Soy wax has grown in popularity over the past years because of it’s green benefits and lack of health risks compared to paraffin wax which is commonly found in candles.

Soy wax contains nothing artificial and is non-toxic which benefits both your health and the environment. On the other hand, paraffin wax produces benzene and toluene which are both known carcinogens (health hazard’s).

So in conclusion soy wax comes with no health risks you should be concerned of and much safer than paraffin wax.

Hazards On The Label

On your wax melt container it will always be labelled with a CLP which will warn you about three things; environmental hazards, skin sensitivity and inhalation.

It is important to note that with the necessary precautions our wax melts are completely safe.

To prevent these issues dispose of the wax correctly in accordance with your local regulations.

Make sure you handle the wax melts carefully and minimally and try not to inhale the vapour too close to the burner.

Flames And Flammability

When using a ceramic wax melt burner Little Miss Twiggie Twinkles recommends using four-hour tealights. We recommend this to minimise the risk of the burner overheating and potentially cracking. Burning for longer periods of time can also impact the quality of the scent  produced by your chosen wax melt.

The location of your wax burner is very important to minimize the risk of a house fire. The tealight isn’t very exposed but we advise you to always keep an eye on it and do not to leave it unattended for any period of time.

The ceramic wax burners can also get quite hot so don’t touch it while it’s lit.

As long as you keep young hands and curious pets away, keep an eye on your wax burner and make sure there’s nothing flammable too close, there is a very low risk with the flame.

So Are Wax Melts Safe Or Not?

In conclusion soy wax melts are completely safe if you follow all the correct precautions.

These precautions are only minimal and ones that you would most likely take with common candles. Take the open flame from your tealight for example which we urge you to always keep an eye on and away from any reachable or edges which can be easy knocked.

When compared to something like a candle, soy wax melts are a much safer option.

So when you’re shopping for your soy wax melts your only worry should be which gorgeous scent to choose.
